Gynecomastia revision surgery is a corrective procedure that fixes unsatisfactory results of a previous male breast reduction. About 40% of gynecomastia surgeries performed by Dr. Delgado are revision procedures for patients unhappy with the results of their first surgeon. Dr. Delgado’s revision rate is between 1-2% so you can be assured that your second surgery will give you the results you initially desired.

What is Gynecomastia Revision Surgery?

Gynecomastia revision surgery corrects an initial gynecomastia surgery that was either ineffective or did not heal properly. One of the main reasons people receive gynecomastia revision surgery is because their first gynecomastia procedure was too conservative. Patients seeking revision may have only received liposuction but not a breast gland excision. Since liposuction only removes fatty tissue, this technique alone is not effective to treat the root causes of gynecomastia. If a male breast reduction was performed with a breast gland excision but the patient still has full breasts, it is likely the surgeon did not remove enough excess breast tissue.

Gynecomastia Revision Procedure

Revision gynecomastia surgery is different for every patient, depending on the issue being corrected, the remaining scar tissue, and what was done during the primary gynecomastia surgery. However, most revision surgeries involve additional tissue removal (gland excision) and sculpting with the option of several different surgical techniques. Some patients may require fat flaps or fat grafting, depending on how much tissue was removed during their initial surgery.

Dr. Delgado will carefully examine each patient and their case before deciding on the best surgical procedure. Revision surgical procedures are performed under general anesthesia and can take anywhere from 1-3 hours.

Results and Recovery

After revision gynecomastia surgery, the chest area will be wrapped with compression garments to minimize swelling. Surgical drains may also be placed to prevent fluid buildup and Dr. Delgado will remove these at your post-op appointment a few days after the procedure. Most gynecomastia patients do not have significant pain after surgery but you will be prescribed pain medication to alleviate discomfort, especially during the first few days of the recovery period. Make sure to relax and avoid strenuous activity for 6 weeks to ensure the best results.

After 6 weeks, most patients can resume all their normal activities ( including exercise) but it can take up to 6 months for all the swelling to reduce. After recovery, you will see a more masculinely attractive chest that meets your original goals for gynecomastia surgery.

Who is a Candidate?

About 17.4% of men who had surgery to correct gynecomastia require a second procedure and this is most common for men with grade 2 gynecomastia. Candidates may still have breast fullness or abnormal lumps of glandular tissue after their initial male breast reduction procedure. A crater deformity or sunken nipples can develop if too much breast tissue was removed below the nipple, too little tissue was removed from around the nipple and areola, or the areola and nipple were attached to the pectoralis muscle. It is important to have realistic expectations for your revision since excessive scarring or significant deformities can be more difficult to correct.

I had the procedure completed about 2 months ago and I am very pleased with the outcome. My chest finally looks the way I’ve wanted it to look for years. The muscle definition is finally there and I can wear tighter fitting shirts and workout gear without the discomfort of feeling self conscious about my chest.

After Gynecomastia Surgery…Will Nipple Sensation be Lost?

The importance of nipple sensation varies greatly between men.
