Types of Gynecomastia

Male breast reduction surgery in San Francisco will either involve removing fatty tissue through liposuction or removing glandular tissue through excision. In some situations, a combination of both techniques will be used. If needed, the areola may be reduced or the nipple repositioned to create a natural-looking masculine chest appearance. Your overall surgical procedure technique may differ depending on your specific type of gynecomastia.

  • True Gynecomastia: True gynecomastia is caused by enlarged or excess glandular tissue.
  • Pseudo-gynecomastia: Male breasts develop due to excess fat deposits in the breast area.
  • Idiopathic Gynecomastia: No cause has been found for the condition.

Dr. Delgado also provides revision gynecomastia surgery in San Francisco for those individuals who are not satisfied with the work of a previous surgeon. This may also involve eliminating excess skin for optimal results.

Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery

Following male breast reduction in Marin County, you should expect to be bandaged and will have to wear a special compression garment. This garment will help to reduce swelling and support your new masculine chest contour during the recovery process. You will also have a surgical drain which will help to drain excess fluid from the surgical area to avoid complications.

You can expect to experience soreness during the first few days following surgery, though pain should not be significant. Pain medication may be prescribed to help with comfort. Some people may experience a temporary loss of nipple sensation, which will gradually be restored over the course of weeks to months.

The majority of patients can return to light work or desk work after about one week. Swelling will continue to improve as you heal, and you should be fully recovered after about six weeks. Dr. Delgado will inform you of when you can return to light exercise, and eventually, heavy exercise.
